How do you connect to the internet, is it with a dialup modem, or a broadband connection? You'll need to tell us more about the exising setup :)

re sp2 help

right sorry ..it's a broadband 1 meg connection not a dial up i had to reboot the system a few weeks go an it was workin fine until i then decided to install th sp2 package which i have done on my system without any problems. but i also installed mcaffe virus scan 2005 spybot an ad aware an trace destructor i did a scan an have quarrentined some files which i did not recognise and also there is a file on the system called pokapoka which i do not recognise?!! i have had a lokk at my set up but cant see anything which jumps out at me !

Hi Mandolin

First off, you may be aware that SP2 automatically installs a firewall as part of the upgrade. This firewall should by default allow browser traffic and the like thru to the web. The easiest way would be to disable it for a few minutes and see whether or not you can connect to the web. I don't advocate leaving the firewall out of action for too long but you should be OK for a few minutes.

Try this and let me know if it makes any difference. Also, can you let me know who your ISP is, so that I can try to find out what their DNS configuration should be.

Lastly, there is a good chance that the Pokapoke file is "Malware" but the is a free removal tool for it (www.Free-Scanner.com)

Let me know how you get on.

many thanks

many thanks for that info i will try that an i will endevour to get rid of the pokapoka file . the server i blueyonder broadband through telewest i have been on to them an i did a ping test for the modem which he said was working an said that it could be my browser programme ??? an that i should re install the browser but i don't want to do that if i can help it as the programme for that is on the reboot c.d?

Not really convinced on the browser issue, sounds like Telewest passing the buck.

Might be worth trying an alternative browser to see whether that works before yo start deleting anything of the original configuration. Some of the guys on here recommend OPERA but I haven't tried it myself so I can't comment on how easy it is to install.

If you have managed to PING the Telewest host then there should not be a problem with your actual connection.

Have you checked the connection info inside IE6 to make sure nothing has changed from the original setup. If the problem PC is using the same connection type as you, I suggest you compare it to your machine, to save me typing the various steps you need.

As I have said before SP2 is a pain :( unless it is included on the XP disc,

I suggest Restore take it out; or purchase a disc, which includes SP2 then you will not have a problem!

;)

The pokapoka file you refer to is the elitebar malware infection, if i remember right this file will be located in your C:Windows folder, to fix the elite toolbar a tool called LQfix is used.

The best way to resolve your sypware is by creating a HJT log and getting it anylized. First I suggest you join a reputable HJT specialist forum such as castlecops or any other ASAP cert forums

To Create a log - Create a directory on your desktop or your root drive called HJT (do not use a temp folder otherwise you will be asked to move the file to a pernament directory and to repost your log) download the HJT file from merijin - The creator of HJT. Run the tool and select the first button "do a system scan and create a log file" this may take a couple of mins and may appear to lock up for a min or two depending on your software config..once done a log will be produced in you default text ediitor. Copy and paste this log including the very first line "Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1" - From here onwards a HJT remover will help you with your problems :)
