About to reformat my laptop with registered copy of XP Pro
and daunted by the large number of live updates afterwards
(internet conncetion very slow). Can I simply put the SP2
update on afterwards and if so, will this prevent the need
for all the other pre-SP2 updates?

Hi

You can upgrade to SP2, without having to install any of the interim (SP1)
Updates.

That's what the service pack is for. It has every update included up to the
time of the release of the service pack.

Best to have the complete SP2 (266 MB) on a CD; either a download from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2predl.mspx
- the 'Download and Deploy to multiple machines' or order a free CD at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
or see if there is a copy on a magazine cover CD, which we are promised
on at least one within the next week.

Then do your reinstall and run the SP2 update, which is comprehensive
