sp2 expiring

No. After April 12 it will no longer be possible to delay Windows Update
from offering it.

No.
In April, the delay patch Microsoft distributed to allow companies more time
to bring their machines up to spec for SP2 expires. It becomes necessary
for companies and those who applied the patch to find other ways (turning
off automatic updates, never approving the updates in SUS, etc) to avoid the
installation of SP2 after April.

Therefore, SP2 does not expire.. the legitimate method provided to prevent
the installation of SP2 expires.
 
Do I understand this to mean that my computer will be updated to SP-2
whether or not I want it?

Only if you failed to read what I said..

You can easily avoid installing SP2, likely for a good long while. However,
it may mean - at some point - your installation becomes obsolete/unsupported
before people who have followed the proper path and updated to SP2. It also
means that your machine is likely more vulnerable to certain types of
attacks than others. You just have to start updating manually instead of
automatic, or not accept the update on your SUS server (if you have one) and
so on.
 
Shenan thanx- a very concise an reasonable explanation of what some
people indicate is a scary situation.
 
You don't have to update to SP2 but subsequent updates will likely require
SP2. As will some software. You really should update.

I instaslled SP2 some time after it came out on a new machine, new XP Home
install. After loading my usual bunch of apps I found that one I use on
occasion (MS Visual C++ v5.0) would not let me access the help system. Also,
a couple of other apps - don't remember which now - would not run correctly.
I don't use VC++ enough to warrent upgrading, and couldn't see replacing the
other apps. I do check for critical updates manually and use both an AV and
firewall. After I uninstalled SP2 the above problems were resolved.. If I
MUST install SP2 I will, but prefer not to as long as it is possible to get
by without it.
