SP2 does not install MM2.1

I've been updating my XP system all along and the MS auto-update has scanned my
system and done its thing. However, when trying to use MM, I find that it's
still v2.0. Additionally, this version immediately gives me an error (that's
all it says
"ERROR") and then it hangs. Nowhere on the MS site can I just download the
MM v2.1.
Why doesn't SP2 install the correct MM version and how can I get it for a
manual
installation?

the Setup > MM2.1 page of my site has some info about checking the files and
registering the DLLs manually....

if you have SP2 installed, the files should be on your hard drive.
