SP2 causes MM2 failure?

Hi all,

Here's my case:

Prior to installing SP2, I had MM2 working just great with my PCI 1394A card
and Sony DVR. No problems at all.

After installation of SP2 the 1394A card appears in the Device Manager
correctly. However, no matter what I do I can get MM2 to recognize my Sony
DVR. I keep getting a message to the effect that no device was found.
I've tried everything I can think of. Moved the 1394 to different slots,
etc.

Here's the rub: I didn't install SP2 on my wife's computer also running
WinXP. So I moved the 1394 to her machine and downloaded/installed the
latest MM2 version. It works like a charm. So the only difference I found
so far is SP2. Granted we have different MBs and versions of XP -- I use XP
Pro; she's XP Home.

The 5 driver files in SP2 are different in every detail except name.
Different dates and file sizes. So the drivers have changed.

I've read postings by other people having the same problem --- but no
solutions.

Somebody out there must have an idea of what's going on. Microsoft seems
to not really give a rip -- IMHO.

Thanks ahead!

Don

Hi Don;
Windows XP treats a 1394 connection as a Network connection.
When you installed SP-2 the firewall is enabled by default. Try turning this
off temporarily, and see if your DVR device is then recognized in device
manager.

Let us know
Jeff

Thanks for the reply. But.... I turned the firewall off upon installation
since I set behind a NAT router. Sigh....

Wonder if I removing it as a network connection would help.

Nope. Same old message. Dang nab it!

Which 1394 adaptor are you using ? Do you have any other 1394 devices (e.g.
a external hard drive) that you can connect? Are there any other devices on
the 1394 bus besides the camcorder ?

Hi Randy,

It's an ADS Technologies Pyro 1394 DV. No other 1394 devices connected.
Wished I did have another 1394 device to make sure the card was working on
my computer. However, I knew the card wasn't defective since it worked on my
wife's.

But the good news is I finally got it working. Maybe took a step or two
extra but it now works.

1) Uninstalled SP2. Reinstalled SP1a to get USB2 drivers. Sony DVR could
now be seen via Ctrl Panel | Scanners and Cameras. At least a step in the
right direction. However MM2 still had trouble although it got further.
This time I got the message: "Capturing profiles cannot be found."

2) Did a web search on the error message and found this:
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=318 In
summary it says to reinstall Media Player 9.
I had upgraded to version 10. Installing MP9 solved the problem. Would
appreciate knowing why. Could I have just reinstalled MP10?

Now I have to decide which component caused the problem -- SP2 or Media
Player 10. I'm good for now since I didn't see much difference in MP10 and
MP9. Also, I had most of SP2 security features turned off. I set behind a
NAT server with its own firewall and didn't like the in-your-face approach
of SP2. When I get some time I'll have to see what else SP2 really
provides. My wife's computer seems to be doing just fine with SP1. No
security problems and no known disadvantages ---- so far.

My hunch is that I could have left SP2 installed and simply reinstalled
MP9 --- or maybe even 10.

I'm open to education re the above. But for now it works!

Thanks

Can you tell me the model # of your Sony DVR ?

Hi Don;
Happy to hear that you got it sorted out.
As to why WMP 9 would make this work as opposed to 10, I am not certain. In
most cases newer versions of software contain all of the previous versions
files, with some added and some tweaked.

When I first read your issue, I tried my Samsung DV on my SP-2 machine. I
had not previously tried it before, and I wanted to see if I encountered your
problem. Windows did detect the camera as a new device, but it functioned
fine after that. I have WinXP Home upgraded to SP-2 with Windows Media Player
10 on that machine.
My order of upgrade was XP Home to SP-2, then finally I installed WMP 10.
I too sit behind an NAT firewall on the router, as well as Sygate Pro on all
client machines. However I still like and reccommend SP-2. One thing that
immediately comes to mind is the new security in IE. With SP-2 IE now blocks
all attempts to install Active-X, which is something a firewall or a virus
scanner will not do. It gives me the information bar which allows me to see
what the item is, and decide if I want to allow the install or not.
Having extra levels of security is never a bad idea.

Anyway, happy to hear you have the DV working.

Take care
Jeff

I just reinstalled MP10 and it still works. This leads me to believe either:
1) There's a problem with SP2, or;
2) The sequence of the installation is somehow an issue.

My order of installation was Win XP pro (clean install); SP2; MP10.

Don, I am having exactly the same problem as you. Could you list again the
steps you took to resolve? I have scoured the web to get help with this and
it seems to be a common problem. But I can't seem to get help on a
resolution.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

It's all detailed below.

1) Uninstalled SP2 (Ctl Panel | Add/Remove Programs). Select Windows SP2
and uninstall it.

2) Installed SP1a to get the drivers needed for USB2.

3)Installed MM2.0 (SP2 includes MM2.1)

4) Reinstalled Media Player 9.0

5) It Worked

6) Reinstalled Media Player 10 to see if it was the problem. It wasn't.
Maybe going through the reinstall process got some links working.

I'd suggest doing 4 or 6 first to see if that does it alone. The link I
show below solved the problem for a person having the same problem.

Hi Don;
I am leaning toward reason #2.
The reasoning for this, is that you have a system with SP-1 and WMP 10 and
your device works.
I have an SP-2 machine with WMP 10 installed after SP-2 and my similar
device works.
Sort of makes you think it must be something with the sequence.
SP-2 was an extensively tested update, but I do not know what version of WMP
was on the systems when the testing was done. If WMP 10 was still in beta
when SP-2 was testing WMP it was probably version 9 that was most tested.

Take care
Jeff

Agree. I just have to care enough about SP2 to take the risk : ) I'll
probably do it when I have lots of time to fill.
