Okay this is confirmed to be SP2, (have uninstalled, then reinstlled):

When launching programs, XP seems to be adding some kind of variable to the
executable (for instance 'iexplore.exe /switch' anything after the exe is a
variable you send to the program.

Now whenever i run some programs - for instance Canopus DV file convertor -
It responds as if I gave it a bad command-line command. But when I right
click the program and go Run As..

Current User:
and untick 'Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity'

Then it works perfect!

Does anyone have any idea how to disable this 'feature' by default?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate any help

Hm. Do you have to perform both operations -- using "run as" *and*
unchecking "Protect my computer..." on *every* program?

Or are there some programs that will run just fine if you leave the
"protect" option checked?

On the programs that won't run without unchecking the option, what is the
exact text of the error you get when you try to run them?

In Canopus DV file convertor - the error is: "The source file
Files\Canopus\dvconv\DVConv.exe can not be converted by this application."

When launching Internet explorer (by icon or by START-RUN "IEXPLORE" - It
will show 'http://files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe' as the address it
attempted to open.

Quicktime player 'Can not open file'

VirtualDub 'Cannot open Files\Virtualdub\Virtualdub.exe'

Its quite obvious that windows' protection seems to be sending the programs
path to the program itself, and when the program cant open the file it gives
an error.

But (verified) this is fine when I select Run As.. and disable that option.

Its an annoying thing as it gets in the way of your workflow, having to find
programs folders and right click - run as - instead of just clicking the icon.

Please assist in this matter!

Thanks

the program exe path is always added as the first parameter on the command
line for all programs started in dos or windows... but this is old, it has
been that way 'forever' and there should be no reason for this to upset any
program unless something else has gone wrong on your system.

Yeah thats great, but if you read what im saying is that that problem is only
there with SP2, and when removed it is fine!

Zorg.
