SP2 and the missing drives

After installing SP2 on a system that was running "just
so", I cannot see any drives in My Computer, even though
they are shown as "Healthy" and "On Line" in Disk
Management.

Also I have Canon Multipass Soft ware for a multifunction
device and the service that it creates will not start up
and recognise the device, so I cannot print.

So far I am not impressed with Microsoft's latest
offering, help please.

Hi,

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Please follow the Method listed in order so that we can narrow down the
problem one by one.

Method 1:
========
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type "regedit" (without quotes)
3. Navigate to this key and see if your drives appear there.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

For Example:
For "E" drive the name is "\DosDevices\E:"

4. Exit Registry.

If you see your drives in the above key in the Registry, we can narrow down
the problem to Method 2 of Group Policy restriction. Please proceed as
follows:

Method 2:
========
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) and Click on OK button.
3. Step 2 opens Group Policy Editor
4. Please expand the tree and traverse to
a. User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer
5. Check if the settings for "Hide these specified drives in My Computer"
and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" is Enabled.
6. If it is enabled, please disable both the settings
7. Click Start -> Run
8. Type "gpupdate" (without quotes) and Click on OK button.

Now open My Computer and see if you can see the drive.

Hope this helps ...... :)

Hi Ashok

I have now tried the your suggestions:
1 "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices" looked OK,
but I found another entry for "Mounted Device1"; I deleted
this and updated and at first all was OK - I could see all
drives in My Computer. Then after a reboot I was back to
square 1, with no drives visible.

2 Tried to run gpedit.msc, but message to say file not
found. I wonder whether, despite smooth running under
SP1, the original Windows installation is damaged/corrupt
and a repair instal is called for.

Hi

gpedit.msc is only available for WinXP Pro, so if you have
WinXP Home, you will get this error.
