SP2 and downloading

Before installing SP2 on XP, I use to have downloading
options like : open, save as, run. Now anytime I download
something it goes to some unknown temporary folder. I
don't have any options to save it where I want it. If I
download a zip file it automatically opens it, which I
feel is really unsafe. How do I get my options back?

When you download a file don't you get a notification from the popup
blocker or did you disable that one?

If you download a file don't you get the "File Download - Security
Warning" with three buttons: Run - Save - Cancel?

I am running Window XP Pro & IE6 with all the latest updates. I am getting
very fustrated trying to download files from Fileshack, Tucows or eleswhere,
which used to be no problem. I do get that requestor - run, save or cancel?
If I chose SAVE the download window comes up but there is no activity. If I
hit the close button, a non-responding program error report is sent off to
the big blue bin at Microsoft. If I chose RUN, it downloads and installs -
however I would prefer downloading and saving the program.

Anything I can do to get this working? I apreciate security but it should
not be so heavy that I can't use my computer.

I hate answering my own messages :-( but with a bit of further reading I
looked at the Internet Browser security options. I have mine set to MEDIUM
and in the downloads sections, I noticed that "automatic prompting for file
downloads" is disabled. I enabled that, tried to download a file and after
I clicked on SAVE I got another requestor asking where to save the file. As
soon as I chose the place, it downloaded fine.

I seems strange that this was disabled - I know I never changed that before.
I sort of consider this a bug. If I click SAVE it should still ask where or
have a default location - just sitting there non-responding is not good.
