After installing SP1 my background and icons were distorted and I lost sound.
I immediately uninstalled SP1 and things seemed to return to normal. Do I
really need it?

Yes, you do, but wait a couple of weeks or months until there
is a solution.

Go to the website of the computer's manufacturer and check for any suggested
updates that would fix any concerns caused by the installation of SP1. For
example, after installing SP1 my computer laptop had sound problems. I went
to the computer manufacturer's website and discovered that there was an
updated BIOS for my computer that dealt with an SP1 "issue." I downloaded the
BIOS, installed it and Presto! All sound problems have disappeared. (That was
just an example, I'm not suggesting that you download and install an updated
BIOS.)
