I have WinXP + SP1 + Windows Updates.

Is there any point installing SP1a, SP2 etc or will running Windows update
regularly achieve the same end result?

SP1a is basically the same as SP1 with the exception that Microsoft Java
Virtual Machine has been removed from SP1a, so if you need java virtual
machine i wouldn't even consider installing SP1a. Other than that, so long
as your machine is updated via auto update you have all the updates that
would have been provided on SP1. The current rollup update (what you refer
to as SP2 - SP2 hasn't been released yet - ) simply rolls up the updates so
they are in a more compact form for downloading. Once again, if yopu are
completely up to date with your updates the rollup release should have
downloaded and been installed already.
