I have a Win XP Pro machine that keeps trying to update
with SP1 critical update.

After a few moments an error message comes up "Win XP SP1
is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more
info contact Microsoft." who, of course, are not
interested in an OEM install!

Any thoughts?

Graham

Check to make sure the system clock and date is set
correctly. If it's not it can prevent update from
working.

Hey Graham,

Are you running a firewall or antivirus virus software?
I have to disable my firewall adblocking and cookie control or I get an
error from windows update.

Did this version come preinstalled or did you buy it ?
Perhaps its not legit, a pre-release, or the product key is one of those
microsoft has cancelled because it was pirated.

Run winver

start/run
winver

Post the details on the version line.

Paul

Thanks

Original is fully legal and came pre-installed.

AV may be the answer but not had the problem previously
nor on other machines with same AV.

Firewall not thought to be the problem as the download has
completed.

All other updates (lost count there have been so many)
have installed OK.

Which bit of the download completed, the initial few hundred K folowed by
the license agreement or the loads of MBs.
Do you get as far as it asking if you want to backup files so you can remove
sp1 later ?
Do you think it might be a space issue ?
Is XP on a fat or ntfs file system ?

Is this an HP system by any chance ?
