In addition to the two correct answers already posted:

Right-click My Computer > Properties, General tab.

Then neither is installed. You are *way* out of date.

Then you apparently have neither installed. I'd suggest that you get
SP2 installed as quickly as possible.

Since you do not have SP1 or SP2 installed I presume your next step is to do
so.
I would recommend that you perform a full system 'IMAGE' backup using Ghost
or similar utility before you start.
This way on the outside chance that something goes wrong you can get back to
where you started from.

After SP2 is installed (no need to install SP1) and the PC appears stable
then do another image backup.
Next go to the Windows update site and install all the 'Critical' updates
(Skip driver updates). Again if the system is stable do another image
backup. Finally install any misc. updates except for drivers (get driver
updates from the vendor's sites, not Microsoft).

Note: Image backups should not be stored on the same hard drive/partition
that Windows is installed on.

Never tried it for this type of an upgrade, I do think there is a un-install
for a service pack but if you can boot the system then an image backup is
the only way to go. Will this happen, very unlikely, but if you have a
stable system that you have been happy with then to me it's worth the effort
to be able to go back to what you had if the upgrade causes major issues.

Well, there are several security patches for IE, as well as an updated
version, included in SP2, si it might fix your problems.

Meant to say 'if you can't boot the system' then an image backup is the only
way to go.
Actually depending on the problem tools like Recovery mode may work also.

A version of iexplorer has been part of Windows since at least Win 3.1
(which was my first real encounter with Windows). Updates to iexplorer tend
to be separate from XP, but there is a chance that the SP2 update code does
something to iexplorer as well.

According to the headers of your post you have not applied any updates since
installing Windows XP four years ago. Visit Windows Update and let it do an
Express install. At this point that will take a long time.
