I have purchased Windows XP Service Pack 2 on the Official windows magazine.
I try to install on XP Home Edition, a registered original program.
When performing the Inventory I get a message

C:\windows\system32\SMSS.EXE is open

Then the program stops.

I have tried to install in Safe mode but right near the end it again stops
and re-installs all files.

I then get message that XP may not work properly after the files were
re-installed. My whole system has slowed down.

I try to access http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsps but fail to find
such site and action is cancelled

Since trying to install I now try to go to Control Panel but then get a
message Explorer needs to close. I cannot access control panel at all.

What now!!!! Please help. URGENT I need my computer to work!

I cannot get the "free" disks, I am a pensioner with no credit card

There is no credit card required when ordering that CD. It is free.

SMSS is involved in logon, accounts, etc. It is a system file - "session
manager subsystem." I don't know why you're getting an error about it. I
also don't know what you mean by "inventory." What program are you using to
do that? (Forgive me if it's part of the SP2 install but it's been so long
since I've upgraded to SP2, I forgot if it's a pre-install tool or not.)

Support pages for SP2 can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/howto/default.mspx

One of the links that is especially helpful is the "what to know before you
install SP2." Making sure that the system is clear of malware is imperative
for a successful installation. This article gives the lowdown on how to do
that and how to do other preparation.

Sharon;
It is free in North America, but a few other paces I checked it costs $.
Also a few weeks ago I checked and there was a price in North America but
that seems to have changed back to free.

Thanks for the info, Jupiter!
