Hi everyone,
I'm new to this group and I was wondering about the installation of
SP2. I have the CD of the upgrade coming in the mail because I know it is a
big file, this is for the two desktops I have. I have just bought a new
laptop and it was set to automatic updates. It downloaded SP2 before I had a
chance to stop it. The upgrade went smooth and I have no problems with it.
What I was wondering is that I would like to delete the file because I don't
have a very big hard drive on the laptop and I want to delete anything not
necessary. Can I delete the file with no problems and where is it on my hard
drive.
Thank you for your help.

They don't want to REMOVE SP2, just the compressed file(s) that were
downloaded to install it.

You may dig around in the Windows diectory and look for something
("Temporary update files" maybe?) that looks right. Sorry I can't help more.

Yes, you can remove SP2. Installing SP2 does use a lot more disk
space, so if you're willing to be without it, you can remove it.

Before you start, MAKE A FULL BACKUP OF ALL YOUR DATA FILES AND
ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS NO-OS INSTALLED! Make sure you have your
serial numbers, keys, etc. available. You shouldn't need them,
but ... those are famous last words.

First, look in the Add/Remove (in Control Panel) and see if it's
listed there. It's there on my XP Pro desktop machine. It most
likely is, and you can Remove SP2 from there.

If that doesn't work, Microsoft has a fairly decent article on
removing it.

You can also Google for it and get a lot of different opinions.

Now, that said, are you sure you want to do that? Microsoft is
discontinuing support and updates for pre-SP2 XP systems. SP2
has a ton of added security features and other logical things
that are useful but mostly invisible unless you go looking for
them.

You -might- be able to to squeak a bunch more space out of your
drive by compressing everything but the operating system. XP
with SP2 handles the compression handily, behind the scenes, and
does not cause any noticeable slow downs. The
compression/decompression all works behind the scenes and
automatically; other than blue text in Explorer, you'll never be
aware of it being there. Assuming you've used My Documents for
creating/storing your data files, etc., you can compress it, and
get it plus everything in it compressed all in one step, which
should get you quite a bit of space. Text and .BMP files
compress fantastically well to minute sizes.
You might also check the size of your swap file (page file in
XP); I -think- SP2 sets it for you, so if you had it set manually
rather than default, it could have grown, too.

G'luck
