When I try to install SP-2 on Windows XP I get an access
denied message. The information on the Microsoft
knowledge base is not helpful. I am a reasonably
experienced user but I sure don't feel comfortable
interpreting the Svcpack.log and trying to identify
registry permissions issues. I have been successful
installing SP-2 on my HP laptop; could this be a Dell
issue? I tried to get Dell to assist but they insist it's
a Microsoft issue.

Some malicious spyware programs set permissions on the registry to make it
difficult to remove them. This can in turn cause problems when you try to
update to SP2.

About Spyware:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

You can try the following steps to restore the security permissions back to
defaults. Not sure if it will work on XP Home edition or not...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313222

[To do just the registry, the command would be secedit /configure /cfg
%windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose /areas REGKEYS ]

Before attempting to install SP2, you should do a spyware check. One
popular tool is at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
