As I'm in the process of doing my first real build, I've used a variety
of reference sources.

This forum, along with a few others.

The advice from friends.

A couple of magazines like Maximum PC and PC Modder.

Anything else that I should be aware of?

Thanks again for all the great advice that I've gotten here already!

Get plenty of sleep (no midnight builds at first) and take
your time. Make sure PC power supply is switched off or
unplugged while removing or installing parts. It may be
helpful to clear the CMOS and load setup defaults when first
getting system running, and check the bios hardware monitor
(health) page to see if temperatures and voltages look ok.

Run http://www.memtest86.com for at least a few hours before
trying to install the operating system.

Some people prefer to flash upgrade the motherboard bios to
latest version before proceeding with OS install, but if the
bios hasn't been released for at least a couple months then
the 2nd newest bios might be a safer bet... sometimes new
bios have new bugs and are pulled/replaced, it doesn't
happen often but could be a real PITA to deal with when it
does. On the other hand, same applies for too old a bios,
it too can be a PITA when starting out so at least something
newer than the original bios a board ships with, is
generally the best. Be sure system is stable if/before
flashing bios, memtest86 is one way to do so.

Assuming you are installing Windows on a motherboard with an Intel chipset,
you are supposed to install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
(INF) file first, before loading the drivers in. This helps the drivers
find the hardware on the motherboard. Sometimes it is not necessary, but it
won't hurt.
