Sounds Will Not Play

I'm running PowerPoint XP and trying use the "Insert Sound from File" option to have a song play on my title slide and loop until stopped. This has worked fine in the past.

Now when I try to do this, the sound simply does not play...at all. I've tried this on a blank new presentation too.

My volume is turned on. I'm able to play the same sound file(s) in an external application (WinAmp & Windows Media Player). I reinstalled PowerPoint, and also ran the 'fix installation' utility. Videos do not play either.

How can I further troubleshoot this sound problem? Is there something else that needs to be reinstalled?

Thank you!

I'd start with your registry settings for MCI. See
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm -- especially
the screenshots in section 3.

Good information -- however, I couldn't get all the way through the process.
I am using WinXP - the instructions say to look for the following using
RegEdit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI
Extensions

However, after "CurrentVersion" I do not have an MCI Extensions category -
I'm wondering if this is located in a different spot for WinXP.

I was able to play both the MP3 and the MPG video file using Mplay32.exe
directly. No luck in PowerPoint. It just doesn't seem to know what to do
with this multimedia.

Thanks,

Not sure why you wouldn't have that category. I'm tempted to suggest you add
it, but I dunno... It may well be there, but you've missed it or something.
Maybe do a find in the registry for the word Extensions.

Since the files play in mplay32.exe, then I'd see if shortening the path to
them helps. Put both the presentaton and the multimedia files in a folder on
your C drive -- C:\Test Then delete and reinsert the media into PPT. Do
they play then?

I did a find for Extensions in the registry and did not find anything. I
actually didn't even find the "CurrentVersion" directory.

I moved both the video and MP3 into the same folder as the PPT file,
reinserted onto the slide, and still no audio or video.

Baffling! I don't know what I'm going to do.

OK, my mistake. I did find the correct area in regedit and all was identical
to the screenshots.

I downloaded a Nimo codec pack, but still no sound or video from my
PowerPoint slideshow.

Thank you for your help. I think I need a PC rescue. *sigh*

Did putting both the presentation and the video in a Test folder on the C drive (C:\Test) help?

You might try changing your hardware acceleration, too. http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm

Echo,

You're a genius. I moved the PPT and the multimedia files to the C:\test
location and both the video and sound problems were resolved.

I did notice that the sound was somewhat garbled however. It sounded like
little chipmonks were 'yelping' throughout the song. I played the song in
WinAmp outside of PowerPoint and all sounded fine.

The video displayed and sounded perfect.

I turned down my hardware acceleration one notch, but that did not have an
effect on the sound quality.
