try I have a strange problem which is intermittent. Sometimes when I start
up the Windows sound is distorted as if running too fast and all other sounds
are distorted (i.e. fast) Then another time at start up all is fine until
shut down but the next time it will be too fast again. I have checked the
device manager which states that all is OK. What is happening and what do I
do about it?

Sue,

I had the same thing happen very long ago...I belive that I simply installed
newer drivers for my sound card and everything was fine.

Maybe go to the website of the manufacturer of your sound card and see if
new drivers are posted for Windows XP. If you have an 'on-board' sound chip
(such as Realtek, SoundMAX, etc...), then you can either visit your
computer/motherboard manufactuer or the sound chip manufacturer for drivers.

Let us know if you have anymore questions. Good luck.

Thanks for yur reply.

I do have SoundMax. After posting my question I tried their website but got
very confused. My PC is a Compaq (now HP) and I tried their website too. I
downloaded what was supposed to be a driver for SoundMAX but when I unpacked
it to install it seemed to be software and gave an error message saying the
driver was missing! Now what? I don't know about motherboards ... I
installed Windows Service Pack 2 last week and HP said that it was difficult
to download properly with SP2 because of firewalls etc. Also, I use Firefox
as a web browser expect when contacting Microsoft.

Hello Sue,

Sorry to hear you are still haveing troubles. When I had the smae problem,
it was on a Compaq also...hmmm.

About thie missing driver error; have you tried re-downloading the file?
Sometimes, the file won't be downloaded properly and you get errors such as
the one you have. Also, be sure remove the old SoundMAX driver from the
Add/Remove Programs list, restart the system, and then install the new driver.

The driver provided from Compaq *should* work (It seemed to work very well
for me when I had my old Compaq). However, if you are still having trouble
with Compaq's drivers you can visit SoundMAX's web page and they should have
drivers for you to download alternatively. Although, I'd still use the one's
Compaq provides first.

Good luck!!
