I receive this error meaning my sound card was improperly or needs to be installed. I installed all of the drivers but the default settings mute everything.
How can I resolve this?

Un-mute them !!!

Double click on the loudspeaker icon in the systray to do that.

C00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that might be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the "Sound Troubleshooter" topic in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
P.S. Updating the drivers that are compatible with XP should help.

I dont even have the loudspeaker in my system tray. I put the soundMAX icon there however, it does not show a device. So how should I install it?

Lets try something from a different angle:
Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager
Now scroll down to "Sounds, video and game controllers", is there a
Yellow question mark on it? If yes, it means it is not installed. Go to:
Start/Control Panel/Sounds,...etc./Hardware tab/Properties button/Driver tab
Update driver - now have your Utility, Sound driver or Maintenance disk ready to
insert. It should have come with your PC when you bought it. Check for one
that may have drivers for the soundcard. It may also have SoundBlaster on it.

SoundBlaster is a trademark of Creative Technology. soundMAX is a whole
different company. It will _not_ say SoundBlaster unless it's Creative
hardware. It might say "SoundBlaster Compatible" however.
