Well, the problem i am having happened after i upgraded
to win xp pro. what's happening is my sound is buzzing,
or becoming distorted. Take winamp for example, every now
and then the song will pause, and i will get a loud buzz,
like its playing that particular split second of that
song over and over. its kinda hard to put into words. its
just a loud buzz, like feedback or somethin. this happens
also when playing games, watching movies, (DVD's, mpeg's
etc..) ive tried all the latest drivers for my sound card
and mobo. the only thing ive tried that made a difference
was uninstalling everything relating to my sound card,
then rebooting and letting win xp install its own driver.
that fixxes the buzzing, but the i am unable to open up
audio hq and my surround mixer. when i am unable to open
the surround mixer, i get a error referring to
devcon32.dll. dont remember the error msg off the top of
my head. I have also tried moving the card to a different
pci slot. that did nothing and the card was still using
the same IRQ. any advice that can be offered would be
greatly appreciated. heres the stats on my system:

athlon xp 1700+
win xp pro sp2
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP mobo VIA KT400 Chipset Hyperion 4.49
drivers
256 mb Samsung DDR400
Radeon 9000 Pro Catalyst 3.7
Directx 9.0b
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 X-Gamer Latest Drivers
Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40gig ATA 100 HD

I have the same board as you.

I can tell you that using PCI slot 5 is best for sound
cards. PCI slot 2 is a nono if you are using the onboard
network, and slot 4 shares with the AGP and should NEVER
be used. Slot 3 shares with the raid. slot 1 and 5
share; leave slot 1 empty and put the sound in slot 5.

the reason you can't use audiohq or surround mixer is
because you are using the MS driver.

I would try this: uninstall the sound card in windows,
power off, remove sound card. go into the bios, and go
into pci/pnp config. there, force an irq to slot 1/5 (one
that isn't being used). Also, go into integrated
peripherals and disable any devices not being used
(disbling serial ports frees up 2 IRQs!!). Power off,
reinstall sound card in slot 5, then try the creative
driver. There is a PCI latency setting in the advanced
chipset bios settings...or somewhere else in the bios.
set that value to the highest one.

also there is another thing to try, a pci latency patch.
it can be found at www.georgebreese.com...go to
downloads. this patch helps fix sound problems on via
chipsets.

my soundcard has been in slot 5 and is using IRQ 17 all
by itself. i didnt see any pci latency setting in my
BIOS. i saw something that might be it, but cant remember
the name. tried both enabled and disabled. No effect.
latency patch also had no effect. i did try completely
uninstalling everything and installing everything from
the original install disc even though i get a warning
that it is not xp compatible. i dont get any sound
problems and both audio hq and the surround mixer open.
but the surround mixer's spectrum analyzer isnt working
corectly at all. the levels are bouncing all over the
place with no sound and no matter what is muted. i tried
then installing just the surround mixer from the driver
update package, but that didnt work. after that i get an
error pointing to devcon32.dll. the only way to fix that
error that i can find is to install the latest audio
driver, but when i do that i get the audio problems
again. anyone have any problems even remotely similar to
this?? Thx for the help so far and i would appreciate
even more
