My microphone disappeared when I reloaded Windows XP
because of an instability problem. How do I go about
finding it, so I can again hear sounds, music, etc.

Are you talking about the speaker icon in the lower right
area of the task bar?? Or do you really mean
the "microphone is missing"??
If its the speaker icon..click 'start' then 'control
panel', then select sounds and 'audio devices' and click
the box that shows 'place volume icon in the task bar'
Hopefully that is what you are looking for...
 
Because you've reloaded XP, try and re-install your sound
card drivers and see if that helps.
