i recently downloaded XP to my labtop (gateway solo 2150)
which is 4 years old. I have been unable to get any
sound. I have tried to download all the drivers for my
system from the gateway web site with no help. I have
also emailed Creative Labs (sound card maker). I am
fearful that I will never have sound.

If there are no XP drivers from Gateway, you are out of luck. Try Windows
2000 drivers, they will sometimes work.
