I have inserted a sound file into a slide.

the sound begins when I click on the speaker icon in the slide show mode.
Kindly let me know how do I stop it midway.

Add a stop effect, select the loudspeaker icon, in the custom animation task
pane, click on add effect, sound actions, stop. Drag the animation effect
beneath the play effect. Now during slide show click to start the music and
click again when you want to stop. How to stop it exactly midway that's
another question.

you should set up the effect of your sound file .Follow these steps:
1>open your powerpoint presentation
2>Animations>Animations group>Custom Animation
3>there is a Custom Anmation window displayed
4>click the sound file that you wants to stop,in the pop-up window
choose the Effect Opions...
5>in Play Sound window, set your sound file under the Stop
playing,choose After....slides
