OP posted the same in OE6 NG. I advised him to ask in the NG for his OS. I
doubt it's a IE or OE problem.

Does Windows Media player play sounds?
Are your speakers turned on?
Is the volume turned up?
Right click the speaker in the Notification Area and make sure none of the
sounds are muted.

I have been thriough them before. I tried ones that were new or that I
thought I had not tried previously.

All sound works except windows sounds or sounds that I add to OE or IE. All
software is up to date and I run Windows XP.

Hi don :-)
I am not getting any windows XP sound alerts in IE 6. Anyone know why?

In addition to the other suggestions:

Have you updated the Audio and Sound device drivers?
Did you have sound before and just lost it? If you just lost it, how long
ago?

You might also try the following:

Change sound schemes
http://www.petri.co.il/change_to_no_sounds_sound_scheme_by_default.htm

Or..

Start>Control panel>Sound, speech, and audio devices>Change sound scheme
Select "Windows Default" from the drop down menu under Sound Scheme
Click Apply>Ok

Hope this helps.

thanks Jan.

tried the driver update and it said that I have the most current version.
I reset to default and went to the website. No luck.

Thanks Vincenzo. I loaded everything on that page that dealt with sound. I
have download system sound, start up and shutdown but still no mail
notification for OE.

Sorry Vincenzo I spoke to soon. I do not have system shutdown and startup
sounds just download file sound.

Sorry don, I have no more ideas. :-(
Try to ask in the Windows Xp newsgroup or wait here for some other help.
Ciao.

Did you check the sound scheme and make sure it is set to Windows Default?

Yes I did. Thanks. This is a tough one and I appreciate you guys and gals
hanging in there with me.

Thanks for your help. I at least was able to download some neat XP toys that
I didn't know about. This is a tough one.

There are various things that can cause this type of problem, and you are
right, it is hard to try and nail it. Hopefully, the folks over in the XP
newsgroup will be able to give you a bit more information. You might also
contact the mfg. of your sound card and computer to see what they may offer.
See if there is a forum for the sound/audio devices that you have and ask
there too.

Sorry that we could not help resolve your problem, but, if you do find the
answer, please post back to this newsgroup and let us know what helped you.
It will be a real benefit to other readers who may have the same or similar
problem.

Thank you for your patience. :-)

It may help if you were more precise about this symptom description.

"Works" where? E.g. have you verified with the Control Panel's
Sounds and Audio Devices applet that you have a .wav file assigned
to New Mail Notification, tested the sound of it there and verified that
you can hear it?

If there isn't a file assigned or if you can't play it and hear it
that could be an entirely different symptom than if you knew for sure
that you should be able to hear one and it just isn't being used at the
right time.

Also what you mean exactly by "sounds that I add to OE or IE"?
FWIW I only see Program Events for Windows, none specifically
for OE or IE. Perhaps you have a broken or incompatible sound scheme?

In either case I think it could also be relevant to know if you have
ever used a different mail reader than OE, whether that sound has ever
"worked" on your system and whether you installed XP as a completely
new system or as an upgrade. Etc.
