Sound Volume Not Working

On one PowerPoint slide, I inserted a .wav file, which is background music,
that plays along with my narration, which is another .wav file. The Sound
Settings under the Effect Options does not increase or decrease the volume
when I move the slider. I need to decrease the volume of the .wav file that
is playing the music in the background. When I move the slider all the way
down, the sound does not play. When I move it up just a hair, it is just as
loud as if I move the slider all the way to the top. I installed the Add-In:
OfficeOne Volume Control, and that does not adjust the volume, either. Any
suggestions?

Mr. Wilson, I can't thank you enough!! I have Audacity, and didn't even
think to use it. Now my presentation sounds perfect. Thank you!

Just to add some info, the Sound Volume setting in PPT applies only to
sounds created by your harddrive. (I think that's how you'd describe it.)
That includes files like MID and MIDI. So, the volume setting doesn't
actually work on file types like WAV and MP3. You have to change those, as
you've discovered, in a sound editing program; PPT plays them "as-is."

In fact, I hate that stupid Volume setting -- I wish they'd either label it
properly or take it out.

Ahhh, but it does work in PPT 2007, even on MP3 and WAV files. Yay!
