sound system randomly changed to HD

My sound drivers are correct. My sound is on & speakers plugged in. All
Hardware shows functioning correctly. At random times, Windows XP changes my
Santa Cruz Turtle Beach sound system to "HD", resulting in NO sound at all
even though system status shows a sound is playing. THis applies to system
sounds, Windows Media, all sounds. It's always a surprise as to when this
happens; I could have normal sound for days, weeks, and then the HD shows up
on my speaker monitor, and no more sound. How do I stop Windows from changing
my system to HD?

Is the HD sound built-in on the motherboard? If yes, you should
access the computer's BIOS setup screens and set the built-in sound to
"disabled" since you are using a separate sound card.

It's a 2001 Dell HP. HD sound didn't exist on the original. At the Turtle
Beach Santa Cruz website, there have been problems recorded in the upgrade
from Windows ME to XP with Windows Update changing the valid Santa Cruz sound
driver. re-dowloading the driver from the Santa Crus website previously fixed
this, but not anymore.

set your XP update to notify you of updates only.
Then you can decide which updates to download and apply by going to
the XP update website.
