Dr Evil

I'm playing iTunes quite happily and then opening Outlook
(or other application) when the track i'm playing starts
to stutter, once the application has opened and is running
iTunes returns to running ok - any ideas how I can stop
the stuttering - my pc didn't do it until I had a major
dll file failure and had to reinstall XP.

Here's my spec Athlon 1700XP (1.4ghz), 512 DDR 333 memory,
lastest DFI mobo with Nforce 5.1 sound onboard (I did have
Soundblaster 5.1 Live! PCI card and removed it to see if
it made a difference, it didn't!) Maxtor 80gb hard drive
partitioned in to a system space of 6gb and rest for use
as holding applications, music folders etc.

Hope someone can advise, cheers

Hey

Well it makes sense the music stutters when you load
other applications because they require more CPU power
when they are loading to start. Media Players such as WMP
and iTunes require a constant CPU rate when playing music
and media files. If you have just started a program, the
CPU power is shifted to that program to help it start
faster. However, program priorities can affect this. If
you dont want the music to stutter when loading other
applications I suggest this:

1) Bring up Task Manager by pressing CRTL+ALT+DEL
2) Select the tab "Processes"
3) Locate the program you wish to prioritise eg. for
iTunes, look for "íTunes.exe"
4) Right click on "iTunes.exe" > Select Priority >
(select a priority level)

The priority levels are Low, BelowNormal, Normal,
AboveNormal, High and Realtime. I suggest you select High
in your case. It is not wise to select "Realtime" unless
you have more than 1 CPU. This should work perfectly
since you have 512 DDR MB of memory. Its just a hassle
changing this everytime though. Love to know that this
info was useful to you.
