I've noticed that my sound scheme does was not playing, I am unsure when the
problem started and have no restore points available to restore to.
I am sure the problem is not hardware related as there have been no changes
to my sound system hardware.
In the sound scheme menu the play button for testing you sound selections is
blanked out.
Also in sound recorder the 5 buttons are blanked out, and on loading a file
only skip to start or skip to end is available not play record or stop.
..wav files play fine in media player.

Sounds like damaged or missing codecs. WAV files are pretty basic and
usually only fail if the hardware is faulty. When it's other sound file
types, it's usually a codec issue.

The following article walks you through using the XP sound troubleshooter.
It also contains links to other informative MS Knowledge Base articles

I do nnot think it is a codec problem as my wave files play in media player.
Also I have tried sound troubleshooter which is of no help as there are no
error messages and sound is working fine, I am not getting half played sounds
I am getting sounds not starting, the play button is actually blanked out in
wave related aspects of windows, but not media player, also I have found no
similar topics on the MS Knowledge Base.
Thank you.

Have you tried the Direct X tool yet? Start> Run and type in dxdiag. Run
the tool to be sure DirectX is current and not damaged.

I had a situation similar to what you're describing after installing one
version of Nero's Player. This registry fix from MVP Kelly Theriot reset
the value for the default sound (situation and solution documented in a
Knowledge Base article as well). When that value is missing or incorrect
other sound issues can appear. These were fixed for me after using the reg
patch from Kelly here:
