I use PowerPoint 2003.

When I record a sound from the recorder in Windows XP and then add it in my
presentation, the sound quality is good.
But when I want to record it directly from PowerPoint, the sound quality is
poor.

Any suggestions ?

Are you recording through Slide Show > Record Narration?
If so, click on the Change Quality button on the Record Narration dialog box.
Click on the Attributes dropdown menu, scroll to the bottom and select the
last option. Click ok to apply changes.
This should get the quality better.

Try changing the quality from Slide Show > Record Narration.
Then record your sound again through Insert > Sound > Record Sound and see
if the quality is better now. (Not sure if this works though, don't have a
mic here. Correct me if i'm wrong.)

If it doesn't work, you can record sound on specific slide through Slide
Show > Record Narration. When you click Slide Show > Record Narration > Ok,
you will be prompt whether to start recording on the current or first slide.
Select current slide and record your sound. Once you are done, press 'esc',
and click save. If you want the sound to start only when you click on the
sound icon, proceed to the custom animation and delete the play effect.
