Sound Profiles gone !

Hi there, I hope someone can help !

I noticed when I should have got sound from Windows actions, I just
got a beep from the internal speaker insetad (Windows Media Player
plays through the sound card OK).

I went into Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Sounds.

I used the drop down menu to select "Windows Default Scheme" but
instead of all the options there are only four :-
- Contact Online
- New Alert
- New Mail
- New Message

None of the others are shown !

How can I get them all back ?
I have a second computer (also running Win XP Pro) so if I need to
copy the profile over (where ever it is ?) I can do that !

Please help me restore Windows sound again :)

The sound events and schemes are user specific. These are stored in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents key.

When a new user is created the default AppEvents key information is
obtained from the Default User profile (HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\AppEvents),
you can rebuild the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents key from the default
user information, just export the default user key, edit the exported
file and rename the base key from HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then merge the key to the registry. Be sure that
you understand the registry and how to edit it before you undertake to
do this manually, create a Restore Point before you proceed!

An easy way, or the easiest way to correct the problem is to log on to
another account that has all the sounds, or create a new user and log on
to the new user account then export the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents key.
Log off the new user and log on to the user with the sound events
problems and merge the registry entry that you saved from the other user
to the current user. You can use the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents from a
user on your second XP box and merge it to the user on the other box.

Firstly I must aplologise for the slow reply, but I have not had time
until today to sort this out.

I would like to thank "JohnJohn" too for his help but I was a little
frightened of messing with the registry !

I went to the "Restore Sound" link you gave (below) then ran it so it
corrected the registry and all my default sounds re-appeared ... it
literally took only seconds ... I can't believe how easy it was too !

What an amazing piece of software .. I can't thank you enough for
helping me .. I really appreciate your help guys !
