Sound problems

I have switched on today and I have no sounds but the media player still works!

The problem arose after I removed Windows One Care Beta that I decided to
evaluate - it caused so many problems I decided to remove it. I also removed
Windows Defender.

After removing them the sound was fine.

I have worked through other sound problems (Especially XP original sound
11/16/2005 - Carey Frisch ) with no luck.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Does the sound volume icon show in the systray?
Is the sound muted?
What shows as your Preferred Device in Control Panel > Sounds > Audio tab?
Are any devices showing conflicts or as Unknown/Other in Device Manager?
Is your sound device listed in Device Manager under Sounds, Video and Game Controllers?

Brian,

The sound volume icon doews not show although it is selected in SOUNDS AND
AUDIO devices.

THere is no sound either system sounds or sounds from other installed
programs. But Media player plays as normal with sound!

The default device is SOUNDBLASTER LIVE 24 bit.

There are no conflicts in device manager.

The SOUNBLASTER is listed and it says the device is working properly.

Thanks for your help.

Do you mean the box "Place volume icon...." is checked under the Volume tab?
If yes, do you have the box "Hide inactive icons" checked in the Taskbars properties?
Right click an empty spot on the Taskbar.
Click Properties > Taskbar tab.
Uncheck "Hide....", click Apply > Ok.
Either right click the volume icon or double click and see if the sound is muted.

Ok, for the moment I await the above answers.

Yes it was hidden but the icon has still not appeared in the task bar. I can
get it from Control Panel.
In Control Panel > Audio and Sounds applet > Sounds tab.

No. There is no response. However I can play the sounds through the media
player - so they are there!

If a sound is not associated with an event it will never play for that event, regardless if MP can play them or not. MP is an apple of a different nature.

In Control Panel > Audio and Sounds applet > Sounds tab.
Click on any of the events to highlite it.
Either select a sound from the dropdown menu or browse to one you wish to use.
Click Apply once you have selected a sound.
Test the sound by clicking the > next to the .wav input box.
Test the event for the associated sound by performing the event.

Brian.

I have decided to re:install XP!

9 hours later all is well. I am still re-installing my programs but the
sound is back!

Thanks for your help.

A bit further than you needed to go but at least it's clean. You could have performed a Repair install which keeps your data and apps intact barring anything going wrong. The only needed reinstall would have been Critical Updates.

Good luck, keep it clean and have fun.
