Everyday I listen to mp3s on my pc while I work. Friday I leave work, shut
down my machine, everything was working ok. Today I come in, start up and
log on and now there is no sound. I checked all my settings using the
windows troubleshooter. I checked my headphones and extension cable and they
work on other machines. Why do I have no sound all of the sudden? Volume is
up everywhere, mute is off, says the sound card device is working properly
and it is enabled. Only thing I can think of is a BIOS setting but no one
has touched my computer to affect that. I'm lost. Thanks!

If you're using a workstation then you'll probably have an on-board sound,
so the BIOS will have nothing to do with what you're experiencing if no
one's touched it. If you have a real soundcard then the only way the BIOS is
the culprit is if you have a conflict between it and the on-board sound.
That is, if inadvertantly the on-board is activated. If no'one's touched the
BIOS then that is not where the problem is.

Are you using an mp3 player plugged into a USB port or playing from HD ?

You may have (inadvertently) done something to affect the sound drivers. If
you're on a network, ask your administrator if you can do a system restore
to last Friday.

Or, you can trawl through this lot :
