Hi All,
I have recently built a new pc but am faced with a problem that I just
cannot figure out......
my machine is as follows

amd 64 3500+ processor
asus a8n-e motherboard with onboard realtec ac97 sound
hitachi 80 gb hd
xfx 6800gt pcie g.card
pioneer dvd/cd rw
Win XP pro (sp2)

they're the basics, my problem lies within the ac97 sound I think.
Whenever I change the volume with the speaker icon on the taskbar my pc
speaker
bleeps and I don't get the chimes like I used to ? (on my previous machine)
I've been into all the bios settings and cannot find anything with regards
to the sound.
Also whenever I go into a game (SOF/Medal of honour/Call of duty) the pc
speaker
bleeps not constantly just whenever it feels like it

I have even tried muting the pc speaker in the sound settings but that makes
no
difference.
any help on this little but annoying problem would be most appreciated.

cheers

It the only problem is getting beeps from the PC speaker once in a while,
why not simply remove the connector from the motherboard?

If you're not happy with the OB sound, you can quite easily disable it in
the BIOS and add whatever card you want. Personally, I've never thought of
Realtec as a worthwhile soundcard....I use Creative sound blaster cards.

Dont know about the random beeps, but the AC97 does beep anytime you change
the main volume level slider, in recognition I guess. This is true regardless
if everything else is muted. If you are not getting normal sound (chimes,
etc), make sure the wave mixer output is not muted (same AC97 volume control
panel). The Sounds tab will test those chime sounds (Right click taskbar
speaker icon, select Adjust Audio Properties, then Sounds tab).

If I am reading your post right, I believe had the same problem at one time.
Sometimes XP just gets screwed up. If so, you want to run the "Disable
System Beeps" repair applet found here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm This is a great site that you
should bookmark! Optionally, I believe the following shows you how to do
the same thing manually:

Turn off system beeps!

Turn off system beeps!
If those beeps annoy you there is a way to turn them off!

Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on
how to get started.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelSound
Once there, locate Beep on the list on the right.
Right click on it and select Modify
Change the value equal to no
Reboot your computer and the beeps will be gone!
