Sound Problem in Win XP

I just installed XP recently, and now my sound doesn't
work. The Sound Controller, picked up as "ac'97
controller" shows it is working fine, but when trying to
play sound it says that either my sound device is in use,
isn't working properly, or isn't installed.

I'm using the MS-6330 Microstar K7T motherboard, which has
built in sound using the VIA chipset. Not sure of model
offhand, but when trying to use 4-in-1 drivers off the VIA
website, WinXP device Manager will either lock up when
updating drivers, or will tell me that the drivers are not
intended for this platform.

I can remove all drivers, reboot, it picks up and installs
the sound card, but still can't get any sound to work. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Everything like that is enabled in the BIOS, I just can't
get the system to allow music to play. I've tried wiping
all sound devices clean from device manager, letting it
pick them up on it's own, and it still won't fine the
right ones. I'm thinking of just giving up and installing
another sound card.
