Hi Guys,

I'm not sure whether this particular problem has been posted before, but I'm
having a problem with with my sound on the A7n8x deluxe.

I have a PCI sound card, which isn't the prob as it's just replaced my old
one. Occasionally the sound will click or stutter, and this happens mostly
when I'm typing or if a display is sudden, (eg, typing an address in the
address bar will prompt a list to show your previous addresses, causing a
pop or slur in the sound)

I gather it maybe a gfx problem, and i have a grforce3 Ti300, with 40.72
installed but still same prob.

Is it worth going back to older drivers untill the prob goes? As I'm typing,
incidentally, the prob is happening!!

Advice would be greatly appreciated, I've ruled out the scard, firewire,
network, assume it must be Nvidia somewhere either mobbo or gfx!

Regards,

Rob.

Tried the older drivers to no avail, still the odd pop or slur in my music
when typing, deleting text etc etc.

Decided to remove all Nvidia gfx drivers on my system, and reboot to see
what XP decided to do.

It installs the gfx card automatically with (Microsoft Corperation) listed
after the device in the device manager.

This driver is also digitally signed.

So far, (although I han't really been testing it that much) I've had no
problems with the sound!

Although I don't get the advanced utility options in the display settings
that NVIDIA offer with their drivers, It doesn't really matter much to me,
as long as my music is pure and my display is crisp!

I'll keep you posted on how it all goes, don't really know what I'll do if
this thing comes back, as it really p*ssed me off at times!!

I had the same problem on my old board (non ASUS)

Problem disappeared when I installed the new board, I have reason to believe
my problem was down to the HDD controller not being able to sustain the
transfer rate enough.

Problem had also occured whilst writing to CD (not that I condone that type
of thing of course!)

Hope this helps

Dave

All this replying to yourself is making me dizzy..
Kinda offputting too heh
anywh0..
What are the cards your trying to use, and why not use the onboard sound..
Creative cards are known for their popping (more like a trademark feature I
would say).. so give us somemore detail on the soundcards.. also dont put
the soundcard in the slot next to the agp slot

As the dx has on-board sound, have you tried without a sound card
(Soundstorm may be better anyway), or disabling the on board sound in the
BIOS?

I'm out of ideas.

I know that there have been issues with crackling on the onboard sound that
do not necessarily go away with driver changes, even though it may work with
a clean install of the same driver.

It's an odd one.

Just been reading up on nForcersHQ... seems to be related to having a
different sound control panel and driver versions.

Is it only when you play MP3s? Could be the Codec?

Hi fellas,

I know I ruled out the player as the cause of this problem, as I was
convinced I tried media player to dismiss that theory.

However, I re-tried media player having done all sorts of other things, and
guess what?!

Well I was chuffed that all I had to do was sacrifice winamp to solve the
problem, but then thought I'd put winamp 3 on (had 2.91 on before) and so
now we are virtually back to how i was without the prob.

I'm not a fan of 3, seems to be too system heavy for a simple mp3 player,
but still, i have my music and i can type away to my hearts content without
having to worry about the sound clicking, stuttering, slurring, generally
being drunk!

Incidentally, if anyone has a etter alternative to winamp 3 please do tell,
the most important thing it must have is the ability to minimise to the
system tray though!!

Thanks again guys, she's purring like a cat now!

One last thing, does anyone know how to disable the RAID check on bootup?
seems to take a few seconds which I WANT!! ;-)

OK, so it sounds like it could have been the mp3 codec you were using...

At one point the MAD plugin was supposed to be better than the Nullsoft one,
might be worth trying that?

I feel Version 3 a bit resource heavy too, nice how you can reskin it, but
seems really slow.

Hopefully Winamp 2!

You can disable the SATA controller completely with a jumper... page 19,
section 2.7 of my manual.

Don't think you can stop it checking for raid partitions though.

You never once mention'd that you were playing mp3's while it "click or
stutter('d)"..
