OK, I'm working on a friends computer. Compaq, Win XP home, 1gig MHz, 256
ram, 120 gig hard drive.
He's not getting any sound. Device Manager shows no problems.
The only time we hear sound is when its shutting down. Makes me think its
some program conflict.
Now's here is the interesting thing. I want to stop programs from running
(so I can see if there is any program in conflict) I
ctrl/alt/delete, the Windows task manager pops up for few seconds, then
quits. Nothing I do keeps it up.
So, I think what's starting up, I run MSCONFIG, it starts up for a few
seconds, then quits.
I looked around windows Knowledge Base, There nothing there.
Anyone out there have an idea of what I could try next?

Searching for keywords such as "task manager" can bring up posts that
deal with similar problems. The PC has a worm that should be dealt with
first. Bruce Chambers often posts this to the group...

This behavior, which also often applies to MSConfig.exe and
Regedit.exe, is typical behavior of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:
