Sound not working

Jeff

I had an old SB16 (original) sound card in an old PC which I gave to my son.
However, I kept getting errors and problems with it running Win 98 so I
installed a Creative SB Live card. However, something is really bugging me.

When I install the card, PnP detects it and installs the drivers and
everything works great. However, when I come to shut down, I get an MMTASK
general protection fault with MMSYSTEM.DLL. When I eventually clear this and
reboot, sound does not work. All the drivers are installed (as viewed in
Device Manager) and there are no conflicts. However, when viewing Multimedia
in the Control panel, it state there are no sound devices!

I've reinstalled Win 98 (several times) and checked that MMTASK and MMSYSTEM
are not corrupt. I've got the most up to date drivers for the SB Live card
and tried the card in every slot with exactly the same result - sound at
first, then errors when shutting down, then not sound!

Please can someone put be out my misery and help me - anything short of a
25lb sledgehammer will do....!

Thanks
