I recently upgraded to Windows XP from Win98. I have an
Aureal Vortex sound card. I ran the Windows update and
installed the drivers for the Aureal card now when I
switch from one window with sound to another, my computer
quits playing sound totaly. The only way I can get sound
back is to reboot my computer. Any suggestions on how to
fix this problem would be much appreciated Thanks

1) I am at a loss to understand how there can be an XP driver for a card
that was a) released 10 years ago and b) is from a company that went bust
six years ago. Thinking you could be right, I took my secondary computer and
swapped its Audigy 2 card for my old Vortex. Not only was it not detected,
there were no drivers available from Windows Update. And, indeed, why should
there be?! Drivers would only be available had the company submitted them -
and a company that's been dead for nearly six years isn't going to be
submitting anything!

2) Solution: Buy a soundcard from a company that's still in business.
