This is kinda similar to Scotty's problem...

Windows and other programs aren't recognizing that I have speakers. The
speakers work, because when I start up and shut down and when I have an error
window pop up, I hear the sounds and music. In the sounds and audio tab, it
says I have speakers and everything is working properly. When I start
iTunes, I get "iTunes has discovered a problem with your audio
configuration." What do I do to get it recognized again?

With a 3rd party player, youre conflict might be with WMP being the default
player, both try to run music files.Open WMP,tools, options, file types
tab,edit &
uncheck the music that itunes now plays..

I don't think it's so much that, as it is that windows isn't recognizing I
have workable hardware.

Truman: The trouble-shooting steps you have taken indicates that your
conclusion is erroneous.
# 1.) If you experience sound on start-up/shut-down and errors, then
Windows has, in fact, recognized that you have audio capability and is
making use of that capability.
# 2.) The fact that "the sounds and audio tab... says I have speakers and
everything is working properly" verifies the conclusion reached in #1.

The fact that "iTunes has discovered a problem with your audio
configuration." simply indicates that you have a problem with iTunes, and
you should contact iTunes technical support to resolve your problem with
their product.
