sound issue from speakers

Just downloaded XP was 98 -- b4 download could play CD, etc -- now can play cd but unable to get sound to into, etc --- have CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device -- what do I do/solve --thanks
 
Thanks for reply -- I am trully novice -- know concept, but do not know where to look, what to look for, what to do & how to install David
 
Again thanks for reply -- REAL NOVICE!! & getting lost/frustrated -- went were you said, but what do I put in & then what -- when I tlk w/tech on another issue abt email that require uninstall & then reinstall, which we have done -- he gave the following, but know I do not have all right & still did not know what to do with it === htpp://www.esc.com.tw/device/driver_sound???_m.htm ?? support modeum K7VTA5 then said two options would show 2,81V for NE/XP and 2.61V for XP ???????????????????? also said to go to device mgr (where) sound card unistall === we I had been on phn since 9:44 & was 1600 (waiting *& call drop) -- batty on phn dying -- unable to get in detail or have him on line longer to follow up -- FYI -- said he was sending me email abt but never got -- it was SRX040212601158 === calling back Monday on that SRX to finish email issue but will be tlk to email dept & that is why need help here on sound, do not want to use up other case on this unless I have to == again thanks for help == pls dumb it down for me what to do & try on sound --thanks

If you click the Words "Windows Update", after it gets through doing its
thing (you'll have to make a couple more obvious clicks) the left column
should have a Drivers link listed. I can't be more specific because I;m
running a beta of the next version of Windows Update.
