Hi Markri,
Make certain that the Sound icon wasn't turned off:
Click Start / Control Panel / Sounds and Audio ...
Make sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is
checked. Click Apply, and then click OK.
If the icon doesn't appear or if it was already checked:
Click the arrow next to the other icons in the toolbar
or tasktray as some call it (next to the time on your
taskbar), to see if the sound icon is hidden.
Windows XP hides inactive icons in this way to cut
down on clutter and present a cleaner looking desktop.
To turn OFF this feature:
Right click on an empty spot on your taskbar / properties
and uncheck the "Hide inactive icons" .
To turn OFF this feature ONLY for the Sound icon:
Right click on an empty spot on your taskbar / properties
click the "Customize..." button, find the "volume" item, click
in the Behavior column next to it and select "Always show".
