On a device running Windows XP, is there a way to take away the sound icon
located in the control panel. This particular computer has alerts which
makes a audible sound but I have people that keep turning it off, etc.

If you click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio devices,
uncheck the box to Place volume icon in taskbar (really the Windows
Notification Area to the left of the clock).

That will prevent them from using that method.

If they circumvent your adjustment, use a tougher one.

Are you referring to the Control Panel - or to the Taskbar /
Notification Area (bottom right of screen, next to the clock)?

To remove the icon from the Taskbar, open Control Panel.
Click on "Sounds and Audio Devices".
Under the "Volume tab", uncheck the box labelled "Place volume
icon in the taskbar".

I forgot to say:

Figure out how they are turning off the volume and then figure out how
to keep them from doing it.

Add this registry entry to remove the "Sounds and Audio Devices"
icon from the Control Panel:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\don't load]
"mmsys.cpl"="YES"

Yes, you can hide the sounds applet in control panel and Start Menu.

Don't forget to set your event sounds before you hide the applet.

Click Start, click Run, type or paste next line and press Enter:
%SystemRoot%\system32\gpedit.msc

In the Group Policy program, click Help on the menu bar for help.
Under Local Computer Policy,
Expand (+)User Configuration
Expand (+)Administrative Templates
Click Control Panel
On right, double-click "Hide specified Control Panel applets"
Click "Explain" tab for further information.

(You're welcome. :)
