Sound gone

I am running XP pro and for some reason the sounds on my computer stopped playing. The normal beeps are there, but I cannot play music files. Instead I get an error message saying there is no hardware sound device installed, but this is not possible since a little while ago I could play all the music. What's even more interesting is that once in a while when I reboot the computer the sounds occur when Windows starts up, but most of the time they disappear

Any clues as to what happened, and possibly what download ruined my computer without my knowledge

Thank

what kind of sound card?
Find out if there is some kind of controller piece of software for your sound card that runs in the lower right corner of your windows.
tell me if u still need help.

My system is showing there is no sound hardware device, but that is not possible since I could play music a month ago.
