I prepared a powerpoint presentation with an mp3 sound
file inserted that I downloaded from Realplayer. The
program ran file until I upgraded my Windows Media Player.
Now I get an MCI error message "MSSYSTEM296 that the file
cannot be played on the specified MCI device. The file may
be corrupt, or not in the correct format." I can play the
sound file separately with Windows Media or Realplayer but
just can't play the file in powerpoint. I have tried
deleting and reinserting the file but the same problem
results. I also have tried to figure out if Windows Media
Player has captured the program as a default player and
isn't recognizing the Realplayer file but I'm not sure
where to fix that if that's the problem. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks

PowerPoint doesn't use Windows Media Player. It uses the Windows MCI
player. Real Player hijacks the Windows MCI settings on your computer and
that directly impacts PowerPoint's ability to play media. That's why I will
not allow Real One/Real Player to be installed on my systems. You'll need
to compare your MCI settings to the lists at the end of section 3 at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm . If you
find any differences, correct your settings and try again.
