Can someone tell me if software comes with Windows Xp
that can edit sound files? For example, I have a .wav
file that's REALLY loud, and I'd like to lower the volume
with that one file only. I've tried deleting it from
Media Player's library, and then using "add file to
library" with the volume levelling turned on. That didn't
work.

Is there any software on my basic system with which I can
modify sound files? Seems to be software for everything
else.

WavTrim, freeware requiring no install, will do the job:

I don't believe so. As I say though, WavTrim requires no install, so it's
quite easy to use even just once and then discard if you like. Just pop it
into a folder somewhere, launch it and use it to correct the audio file in
question. Listen to the result before saving and you're done!

I can tell you and the answer is "no". There are MANY freeware wave file
editors available for download, however.
