Sound file

I am receiving error message: wave devices that can play files in the current
format are in use. Wait until a wave device is free, then try again.
Hotfix is available for SP1 and SP2 but does not apply to SP3.
SP2 allows for increasing size of VFW key in registry but not available in
SP3.
Does anyone know how to increase the size of the wave devices so that sound
files will play?
Thank you.

This does not sound like a PowerPoint question.

I thought so too. My .wav files will not play in powerpoint 2002. I can
play all of them in Media Player. I can play MP3 files in my powerpoint. I
moved the powerpoint files to two other computers with the same result.

Microsoft tells me that there was a hotfix that applied to SP1 and SP2 but
that SP3 addressed the problem and the existing hotfix will not install into
SP3. The cure, it seems, is to modify the VFW key in the registry but SP3
does not have a VFW key that I can locate in my registry.

I have used powerpoint for more than ten years, created great presentations,
and this is the first problem I have had. All my .wav files are less than
100KB - relatively small files....music clips really.

So far, MS Tech Support has been unable to fix the problem and appears to be
stymied.

Shirley;

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you either. The two other computers, were they also XP machines running PowerPoint 2002? Unlikely, but were the .wav files linked?

Michael....

More for you to ponder.....when I run mplay32.exe, the .wav file will not
play and returns the error message....wave devices, etc. However, I can play
the .wav file by opening Media Player and loading it there.
Confusing.........

Thank you for your response. All machines on Windows XP. Two machines
using powerpoint 2002, one machine powerpoint 2003. The only common issue on
all machines is Windows and Office SP3 and the ppt file, of course. I can
use the sound files in MP3 and believe I will do that. Shirley

Shirley;

Any chance you could send me a copy of one of the WAV files that will not play? My address is (e-mail address removed)

Received you file. Thanks very much for sending. I tried your file, and it worked in everything where you said it would not. My OS is WinXP (SP3). I don't know where you go now. Sorry I was not much help.

Michael -

Thought I would give you an update. After three hours on the phone with MS
Tech Support the response from the technicain was: "I am going to close this
file and mark it unresolved." The problem persists. I ran all the .wav
files through Audacity and exported them to new titled files, created a new
ppt file, and ran it on three computers with different configurations and ppt
versions.

However, the files works just fine with MP3. Go figure! Thanks for the
fantastic help.
