Sound error in Windows 2000 Pro

Peter

I have been working with the Atari help desk to try and
get Accolade (which they now control) Softwares "Deadlock:
Planetary Conquest" to work on Win2k Pro. The game was
originally created for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
Because it predates DirectX, and because DOS based drivers
have been eliminated from Windows 2000 it is having some
major problems with the sound. Sound associated with
Cinematics (*smk files) function just fine, but all sounds
(*.wav)and music (*.raw files) fail to function.

Is there a work around or fix for this kind of thing?

Thanks for your help.

Peter,

Can you play *.wav files outside of the game (just find a *.wav file and
play it through Windows Media Player)? If not, you may need to reset your
media file extensions, or check for an update to your sound card drivers.

If you continue to encounter issues with your audio, please reply with a
copy of your DXDiag text and we'll try to help you resolve your issue.

To reply with a dxdiag text:
Click on Start -> Run and type 'dxdiag' in the run box, then click 'Ok'.
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window appears you will see tabs across the
top click each tab and run the diagnostic tests on each. Then click the
'Save All Information' button, which will create a text file on your system
where you specify, as in My Documents or Desktop. Open that text file, copy
the contents and paste it to a reply.

Peter,

Looking through your DXDiag report, your audio hardware support level is
listed as "HW Accel Level: Emulation Only" which means that the audio
hardware is just a step above shut off. In this mode, all audio is handled
by Windows and the audio card simply sends the signal to the speakers. Now,
this may have been something you adjusted while trying to work-around the
issue you are having, or it may not be. Run DXDiag again and check the
SOUND tab. You'll see a sliding bar labeled Hardware Sound Acceleration
Level, which should be all the way to the right for normal Windows
operation.

This is probably not the cause of your problems with your DOS-based games,
but in the state it's in, we cannot check to make sure you have the newest
audio drivers. C-Media makes several chipsets for audio, but you can go
here (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_download_01.htm) to make sure you have the
latest drivers installed. I know you stated that you have the most recent
drivers for your sound and video, but I suspect what you meant is that you
have the latest drivers available for your system from Dell's web-support.
The latest drivers for your video card
(http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) should have a file
version 6.14.10.4523, but your system is showing a file version of
6.13.0010.2942.

Check audio hardware acceleration level and make sure you have the latest
drivers. If you're still having problems with your DOS-based games, reply
with another copy of your DXDiag text (so I can see the updated driver
information) and let me know what games in particular you are having issues
with. I'll continue to work on this with you until we get a definitive
works/won't work answer.

Thanks for the response. I've been away for the past week
or I'd have answered sooner. I can play *.wav files, and
even the *.wav files for the game itself using Windows
Media Player. I cannot play the *.raw files, but I don't
know what program recognizes them outside of the game. I
have the most recent drivers for both my sound and video
cards. According to the game company the problem lies
with the fact that certain DOS-based drivers have been
deleted from Windows since the 3.1/95/98 days. His final
suggestion, after trying every fix he could think of, was
to load the game onto a pre-2000 version of Windows to
play. I found it slightly disappointing that upgrades
would actually make earlier software inoperable, which is
why I came here looking for answers. I appreciate your
response. Below is the dxdiag.txt information you
requested, perhaps you will see an answer that he did not.

Nick,

I cannot get any of the messages beneath this one to load,
probably because of the length of the dxdiag.txt file.
Would you mind emailing me your recent response?

Thank you.

Peter,

This is the last reply I sent to your thread.

"Looking through your DXDiag report, your audio hardware support level is
listed as "HW Accel Level: Emulation Only" which means that the audio
hardware is just a step above shut off.

I know you stated that you have the most recent
drivers for your sound and video, but I suspect what you meant is that you
have the latest drivers available for your system from Dell's web-support or
Microsoft's Windows Update site. The latest drivers for your video card
(http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) should have a file
version 6.14.10.4523, but your system is showing a file version of
6.13.0010.2942.

Check audio hardware acceleration level and make sure you have the latest
drivers. If you're still having problems with your DOS-based games, reply
with another copy of your DXDiag text (so I can see the updated driver
information) and let me know what games in particular you are having issues
with. I'll continue to work on this with you until we get a definitive
works/won't work answer."

Hi,

For sound in DOS applications have you tried VDMSound? It emulates a
sound blaster within the emulated DOS environment provided by Windows
2000.
