Ok Firstly I don't know if I'm posting in the correct section! Kinda new here
:/<br /> <br /> My problem is that after I had various virus alerts (I guess
the website was heavily infected) from my anti-virus (avast) my sound has
stopped ( I did deal with the virus alerts by sending them to the chest).
Both from speakers and headphones. I proceeded to look at the drives in the
device manager and for all the drives under 'sound, video and game
controllers' they all have a yellow exclamation mark in which all have a
satus of : <strong>Windows cannot start this hardware device because its
configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code
19).</strong> <br /> Have no idea what is going on! Have tried to uninstall
and then scan for hardware changes.. all it does is go back to being like it
was before. Then I tried to run windows safe mode and rolling back to a
previous successful regist config. Didn't help either, so I'm kinda stuck on
what to do next! <br /> <br /> Will appreciate any advice given! Thnx<br />
<br /> Btw: Running on An Advent 7084, Windows XP, Media Center Edtion<br />

alt="" /> <br /> Edit: I have tried the 'Update Driver' option, all it does
is give a response that it can't find any available drivers. T_T<br />

If you have an PCI sound card, simply uninstall it & its other properties
listed in device mgr (uninstall all w/o restarting pc),once thru, exit XP &
shutdown pc.Move the card to another PCI slot,xp will reinstall it..

Info on Advent 7084 laptop.

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7084.htm

It is a re-badged ECS 600 laptop. Check the link on that
page, for a link to the ECS web site. They have a
RealTek AC'97 audio driver for the laptop.

The latest RealTek AC'97 driver should also be
available from RealTek themselves.

Then it sounds like you have much more than a driver problem.

The thing about modern computers, it there are no absolutes. Computer
problems were a bit easier to fix, before there was significant amounts
of malware around.

If the computer isn't clean of malware, that complicates matters greatly.
For example, the symptoms might not be just the OS having a problem,
it could be the malware screwing with the installer activities.

In terms of the things needed to install drivers, you know that Windows
has the Registry and it has a file system for the boot drive. The Registry
has hives and keys. If a hive is completely missing, something a driver
installer needs might be missing as a result. The Registry also has
permissions, such that you may not be able, for whatever reason, to update
a portion of the Registry.

The file system has similar failure modes. If a key directory was to go
missing, key files were deleted by the AV program, that could upset things.
The file system has permissions as well, which allow or deny the driver
installer the ability to add files, register DLLs or whatever.

No matter what advice you get, the procedures suggested will get more
complicated and error prone as you go along. At the very least, you
should have backups of your data files, your email database, so that
if a reinstall becomes necessary at some point, you're prepared for it.

There are procedures around, for resetting some of the potential faults.
But when I look at some of this information, I only look at the downside,
like what are the odds the machine won't be able to boot on the next
reboot attempt. And how would you escape from that mess if you were
stuck in that situation. At least some of your efforts right now,
should be to plan for a reinstall, if that ends up being necessary.

In any case, it is best to copy the *exact* error text from the
error message, for someone else to be able to help you. The
"blah blah blah" part might be important :-)

Tried the manual fix for XP as it is shown in the KB I posted instead of the auto
fix
