Sound distorted when I record from TV, ATI 9000 All-In-Wonder

The sound from the tuner in my ATI 9000 card is routed to the microphone
input of my sound card. Sounds just fine when I'm watching the TV live, but
if I record something or use the On-Demand feature, the sound gets
distorted: not as clear and with perhaps a bit of echo. I don't understand
why it would sound fine while watching TV live and distorted when recorded.
All help appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

I pretty sure you should plug it into the line in of your sound card.

You are over driving the MIC input and as said, if your using a stereo
jack, you may be shorting the terminals as the mic is +5 volts on one
term. and mono(in some cases). Connor is correct, line in is what you
should use.

Unfortunately, I'm using the built in soundcard that, when configured for a
4 speaker setup, uses the line-in as the rear speaker input. But, why would
the mic input sound great when watching live, but horrible when recording?

Well, I moved the line over to line-in anyway as I could stand it no longer
and, just as predicted, the problem went away. I'll just have to live with
2 speakers until I get another sound card.

Dan

This can happen if the volume levels are too high. Go in to the
recording volume settings and bump the Mic level down a little bit.

I used a Y stereo splitter to put two inputs into the Line In jack. My
second one is sometimes connected to a tape player from which I
record. Works OK, but affets the TV sound volume if left connected to
the tape.
