I recently did an "anytime upgrade" from a cd that came with my Vista, hoping
that it would help me with downloading programs I have and used on my XP, it
didn't help and in the process I lost my sound device. Now I have no sound.
When I click on the sound icon, it says "you have no sound device installed"
HELP!!!

Have you reinstalled the latest Vista compatible sound device driver?

no, I haven't. How do I do that? And is there a difference between a sound
device and a sound driver?

margaretlee I have exactly the very same problem. I just purchased the is
computer from Tiger.com and it is a systemax venture! It was running
perfectly when i had xp pro on it and yes i has sound. But when i upgraded to
Vista buisness no sound even after doing all the updates. Personally Vista
has been a VENTURE! Nothing works and i have to update everything {that is IF
there is a vista update avaliable?} I was on the phone 5 times today for
support and the only thing they said was to rerun windows vista buisness but
i'm trying to avoid that,i don't want to lose all my files. I went into
device manager and the drivers are there and it says it is working correctly
but for some reason Vista cannot find the drivers. The only thing i can tell
you is to reinstall vista with a fesh install. My email address is
(e-mail address removed) if you want to keep in touch? I WILL figure it
out....Douglas

Yes there is a difference between a device and a driver. Every hardware
device needs a driver which is a program that communicates between the
device and the OS to make it work. Your computer has some sort of hardware
device for sound.

The sound device is either an add in sound card, or a chip on the
motherboard. If the computer is an OEM computer check on the computer tech
support web site to download the sound driver. If it's a retail add in
sound card check on the card manufacturer's web site for the driver. If
it's a chip on the motherboard you would go to the motherboard
manufacturer's web site for it. Get the latest Vista driver.

If you are uncertain what you have post back with what kind of computer
you've got, and someone might be familiar with it.

If you don't want to "loose all your files" does that mean you don't have a
full and complete backup? Having a backup is essential.

Uninstall the sound software and drivers, and reinstall with the latest
Vista compatible drivers for your system.

I have a gateway, AMD Turion 64, with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Whatever
the heck that means. But I have a restore cd, is supposed to do all the
drivers and what not, problem, it says it will also erase all data and files
from the hard drive. I did the back up thing on D drive, will that be wiped
away too?

I have gateway, AMD Turion 64 x2, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premim 32 bit.
I did try to up the drivers, it said I have the latest drivers. I had a sound
device too, or I wouldn't have been able to hear the pesty navigator lady.
The sound was gone after I did the upgrade Windows Vista. My computer is only
3 months old. Should have stayed with my HP with XP, it is 4 years old but
has all the bugs out and maybe in a year or so Vista will too.

Go to the Gateway website and see what they have for the Vista sound driver
for your system. Download that and reinstall it.

That's all I can suggest at this point.

Rock, I missed this last piece of advice, to uninstall my sound software and
drivers. If you remember my computer says there is no sound device installed,
so if I uninstall the sound drivers, it isn't going to make other important
stuff go away, is it? I'm not really as dumb as I sound, but I didn't think
my "sound device" should go away when I did the upgrade thing either.

Because there is no sound device you need to install the driver. Check
first though in add/remove programs to see if there is any software listed
for the sound device. If there is any there, remove it, then reinstall the
drivers. Have you also contacted the computer tech support for help?

Rock,

Went to gateway, did the online tech thing......for 4 hrs. Oscar tried, I
gave him control of my computer and mouse by remote, THREE times and twice I
lost him after 20 minutes of watching my cursor fly around the screen
clicking this and that, to a blue screen and computer off then on again by
itself, (that was kind of creepy) the third time I lost him after about 40
minutes, the computer didn't go off, he just disappeared. Howerver I am
determined, I tried e-mail tech but haven't heard from them yet. I will try
the on line thing with Oscar again tomorrow evening. My feeling is they will
end up telling me I have to send my computer in the gateway, what do you
think?

That seems a bit drastic. Do they have a Vista driver for the sound device
in your computer? What is the sound device - an add in card or a chip on
the motherboard? Is it Realtek or SigmaTel or Creative or?

Rock,

Not real sure, but I think it is the sigmaTel, they answered my e-mail, said
I should go to their site.......again and download the driver/device, don't
know why they think I could do a download and succeed when their own tech
failed three times. I don't have that much confidence in doing it myself.
